MuSeenLandschaft Expressionism: Stage 4 - Franz Marc Museum - Museum Penzberg

1:25 h 21 hm 52 hm 21,4 km moderate

The route is the fourth stage of a multi-day cycling round trip that starts in Munich at the Lenbachhaus and then makes a loop through the MuSeenLandschaft via Bernried at Lake Starnberg, Murnau, Kochel, and Penzberg.

Art and nature enjoyment - between Munich and the edge of the Alps

Upper Bavaria like from a picture book. Picturesque places, beer gardens, baroque churches, Lüftl painting – a fascinating holiday experience against the majestic backdrop of the Bavarian Alps. Nowhere in Germany is there a landscape that connects art and nature enjoyment so intensely as between Munich and the edge of the Alps. Five museums await cyclists where they can gain a concentrated and high-quality overview of German Expressionism. Especially in the Alpine foothills, it makes sense to combine museum visits with impressive bike routes.

From Kochel, the 4th stage first leads via Schlehdorf to Sindelsdorf. Here the bike path goes through the picturesque village, which was the cradle and home of the artist group »Der Blaue Reiter«, to the places where they – primarily Franz Marc – lived, found their motifs, and created their works. It continues to Penzberg, the place of activity of the painter Heinrich Campendonk. An extraordinary collection of the youngest member of the »Blue Rider« can be seen at the Museum Penzberg - Sammlung Campendonk. He translated the ideas of the avant-garde into a magical motif and color world and developed an astonishing, luminous reverse glass technique.

All starting points have a train station, so the tours can be freely combined regardless of the starting point.

Sicherheitshinweise:

Consideration widens paths

Please note that you often cycle on agricultural paths in our region. You are warmly welcome on these paths, but of course these paths are also used by farmers with their vehicles for managing the land. Due to the width of the vehicles, the paths can sometimes become narrow. The paths remain wide enough if all users show mutual consideration and move aside if necessary to make room for others. Please be aware that large machines often cannot leave the paths. Therefore, as cyclists, please move aside if it becomes tight!

Thank you very much for your understanding and consideration for the people who have to work here!

Weitere Infos und Links:

The route has been signposted since autumn 2023.

In addition to the multi-day stage tour, there are also four developed round tours through the MuSeenLandschaft that start at the four museum locations. These individual loops are modular, so that there are options for (shorter) multi-day tours as well as for individual day loops. This allows not only the different museums to be connected, but also the landscapes to be experienced on the connecting routes that inspired the artists to their works.

All starting points have a train station, so the tours can be freely combined regardless of the starting point.
