Radpilgern - Source of strength Ammergau Alps

8:00 h 663 hm 663 hm 104,2 km very difficult

Hardly anywhere else will you find so many spiritual places: whether pilgrimage churches, monasteries, chapels, or wayside shrines – a church steeple is always peeking out somewhere.

It takes strength to invest in this 101-kilometer pilgrimage loop, for which you should allow yourself two days. But what we give on this route comes back to us twice as much. Power places like the Wies Church and Ettal Monastery, the freshness of the Ammer and Loisach rivers, the overwhelming mountain world lining the entire path: every kilometer here gives pure life energy.

We pass tourist highlights of the Pfaffenwinkel and the Ammergau Alps Nature Park – and yet are mostly on quiet paths. Although we come close to impressive mountain masses here, there is no steep climb to conquer on the counterclockwise loop. A total of 870 meters of elevation gain is distributed over many varied sections with lively ups and downs.

Wegbeschreibung:

From Murnau to the Wies Church

After crossing from Murnau with the Staffelsee boat service (which is of course also possible as a crowning finale of the route), a parade panorama awaits from Uffing: with a magnificent view of the Alpine range, the Harberger Street, nestled against the slope, leads enjoyably into the quiet land between the Staffelsee moor and the Ammer Gorge. The hilly, dreamy route teaches us not to stubbornly fight the climbs but to give in to the constant changes that can become a flow. With several Kneipp pools and meditation path stations, Bad Bayersoien invites you to an inspiring stop before heading over the spectacular Echelsbach Bridge towards the World Heritage site: how uplifting it is when from the gentle forest and pasture landscape, almost unexpectedly, the Wies Church appears! This route can also be perfectly linked here with other cycling (long-distance) routes.

From the Wies Church to Oberammergau

Still inspired by the Rococo splendor and the spiritual power of the Wies, the next section into the Ammergau Alps demands some pilgrim qualities from us. Gently but steadily and partly gravelly, the Königsstraße first climbs through forest and meadows, rewarding the effort soon with a long, gentle descent. Too beautiful to just quickly cross is the wild romantic Half Ammer at Unternogg: on its pebbles, you can rest idyllically, ponder the impressions so far – and feel the flow of life. Until Oberammergau, we now follow the Ammer-Amper cycle path: amidst impressive mountains, it leads relaxed and flat through the Ammer valley to the world-famous Passion Play town.

From Oberammergau to Eschenlohe

As lively as Oberammergau shows itself, the way is again peaceful when we allow ourselves a large loop into the Graswang valley before the next prominent destination. A detour to the Linderhof Royal Castle would be possible here, but our route sharply turns into the green source area of the Ammer – where life seems to flow out of nowhere. Via the Ettal mill with its well-known beer garden, it goes to Ettal Monastery, whose basilica vividly brings heaven down to earth in the dome fresco. Not passable but a "push section" is the notorious Ettal mountain, where it goes down laboriously. Instead, in Oberau, the suddenly freed view of the imposing Ester Mountains and the second defining river of our tour compensate: the emerald-green Loisach guides us off the busy road in swift curves to Eschenlohe.

From Eschenlohe to Murnau

At Eschenlohe, the land opens again into soothing wide spaces that provide a relaxed wellness program for body and soul as the finale of a tour packed with highlights. A wide arc leads through the Murnau Moos, which is a habitat of many protected animal and plant species: a huge green lung in front of a dreamlike backdrop, an invitation to deep inhaling and exhaling – ideal to leave the last bit of everyday life far behind. Pure cycling happiness are the last ten kilometers from Grafenaschau: along the Lindenbach, a narrow, excellently passable path winds through the moor to Murnau. On the left, the babbling brook, on the right colorful meadows, before us the Heimgarten, all around chirping and buzzing, and above it all plenty of sky... What power lies in all this!
