LechErlebnisWeg, 5th stage: Roßhaupten - Füssen

3:35 h 65 hm 40 hm 13,8 km moderate

The last stage of the LechErlebnisWeg begins at the Tiefentalbrücke.

After the crossing and the view into the valley down to the lake, you walk past a campsite, then the path heads toward Tegelberg and Säuling and leads to a sailing harbor at the Forggensee. Here you can walk in spring across a remnant of the Via Claudia to the Roßhaupten bathing area. Elsewhere, the old Roman road occasionally emerges from the largely drained lake until it is refilled by the Lech.

A trail leads to a Roman milestone with a rest area. From this promontory, around which Dietringen with its ship landing and bathing bay lies, you have an excellent view over the water to the Ammergau and Tannheim Mountains. Next along the route is Osterreinen, featuring a campsite, marina, and a beautiful bathing beach. The hiking path leads along the shore to the next steamboat station, then immediately walks around Café Maria with its inviting beer garden. Now the path leaves the lake for a while and follows the Forggensee circular route around a reed-filled bay, then alongside roads to the Füssen Festspielhaus, opened with a musical about King Ludwig II. The romantically designed gardens reach to the shore, opposite stands Neuschwanstein Castle on its rocky ridge – a view often enjoyed from the restaurant terrace. Finally, a quiet footpath with views of the castle and mountains leads into Füssen to Kaiser-Maximilian-Platz. You stroll through the old town, return to the riverbank, and reach the end of the LechErlebnisWeg at the Lechfall. Here the Lech plunges into a narrow, deeply carved gorge. On the opposite bank begins the Lechweg, a long-distance hiking trail certified by Europe that follows the river through Tyrol and Vorarlberg to its source area near Arlberg.

It makes sense to take another day or two to visit the royal castles and the Museum of the Bavarian Kings in nearby Hohenschwangau. Behind the Lechfall, the Ziegelwies forest experience center offers a roughly 480 m long treetop path. A boat trip on the Forggensee is also appealing, where you can enjoy the lovely landscape with views of castles and mountains.

Tipp des Autors: If your feet already hurt, you can also take the ship from Dietringen or Osterreinen to Füssen – including a breathtaking Alpine backdrop.

Wegbeschreibung:

The last stage begins at the Tiefentalbrücke. After the crossing and the view down into the valley toward the lake, you walk past a campsite, then the path heads toward Tegelberg and Säuling and leads to a sailing harbor on the Forggensee. Here you can walk across a remnant of the Via Claudia to the Roßhaupten bathing area until spring. Elsewhere, the old Roman road intermittently emerges from the largely drained lake until it is refilled by the Lech.

The Forggensee was created between 1950-54 as the first dam stage near Roßhaupten. The 12 km long and up to 3 km wide lake serves as a headwater reservoir for the downstream power plants and, with an area of around 16 sq km, is the largest reservoir lake in southern Bavaria. Many farms and small villages sank, including Forggen, from which the lake took its name. Today, this extensive body of water is a recreational paradise beneath the high mountains.

A trail leads to a Roman milestone with a rest area. From this promontory, around which Dietringen with its ship landing and bathing bay is located, you have a splendid view over the water to the Ammergau and Tannheim Mountains. Next along the route is Osterreinen, with a campsite, marina, and a beautiful bathing beach. The hiking path leads along the shore to the next steamboat station, then immediately walks around Café Maria with its inviting beer garden.

Now the path leaves the lake for the time being and follows the Forggensee circular route around a reed-filled bay, then accompanies roads to the Füssen Festspielhaus, which was opened with a musical about King Ludwig II. The romantically designed gardens reach the shore, opposite Neuschwanstein Castle stands on its rocky ledge – a sight often enjoyed from the terrace of the restaurant.

Finally, a quiet footpath with views of the castle and mountains leads into Füssen to Kaiser-Maximilian-Platz. You stroll through the old town, return to the riverbank, and reach the end point of the LechErlebnisWeg at the Lechfall. Here, the Lech plunges into a narrow, deeply cut gorge. On the opposite bank begins the Lechweg, a long-distance hiking trail certified by Europe, which follows the river through Tyrol and Vorarlberg to the source region at Arlberg.

Füssen is considered one of the oldest settlements on the northern edge of the Alps and is full of sights best explored on a guided city tour. The High Castle occupies the site of an earlier Roman castellum and was for a long time the summer residence of the Augsburg prince-bishops; today, it houses the State Gallery.

The Benedictine monastery of St. Mang was founded around 840/850 from the mission cell of Saint Magnus. Splendid Baroque rooms are preserved, and the convent buildings house the museum of the town of Füssen. A special collection of historical plucked and bowed instruments by Füssen masters recalls the cradle of European lute and violin making, after the first lute makers‘ guild was founded here in 1562. In the Anna Chapel, the "Füssen danse macabre" from 1602, the oldest of its kind in Bavaria, is preserved.

It makes sense to take another day or two to visit the royal castles and the Museum of the Bavarian Kings in nearby Hohenschwangau. Behind the Lechfall, the Ziegelwies forest experience center offers a roughly 480 m long treetop path. A boat trip on the Forggensee is also appealing, where you can enjoy the beautiful landscape including views of castles and mountains.
