König-Ludwig-Weg overall route main route

31:44 h 1660 hm 1458 hm 120,7 km moderate

The first long-distance hiking trail in the Alpine foothills follows the footsteps of a man who is almost considered the epitome of a dreamer - Bavaria‘s fairy tale king Ludwig II, over a length of 127 km.

A true pleasure is the wonderful connection between the landscape Ludwig loved so much and the cultural treasures it contains. Everywhere there is plenty to see and marvel at, to admire and enjoy. All this is embedded in a dreamlike landscape with idyllic lakes and unique panoramas such as from the Hohen Peißenberg, the highest point of the route at 988 m above sea level. From Starnberg via the world-famous Andechs Monastery this route leads to the Marienmünster in Dießen am Ammersee and further to Wessobrunn Monastery, over the Hohenpeißenberg (988 m above sea level) and through the Ammerschlucht to Rottenbuch. The Wieskirche, the Welfenmünster in Steingaden and the royal castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau mark the end of this scenic and culturally rich hike.

The route is divided into five comfortably walkable daily stages:

Stage 1: Berg – Dießen, 8 hours, 32.6 km

Stage 2: Dießen – Paterzell, 4:45 hours, 17.2 km

Stage 3: Paterzell – Hohenpeißenberg, 3:45 hours, 13 km

Stage 4: Hohenpeißenberg – Rottenbuch, 4:00 hours, 13 km

Stage 5: Rottenbuch – Prem, 6:00 hours, 22.4 km

Stage 6: Prem – Füssen, 6:45 hours, 24.6 km

Tipp des Autors:

Special highlights of this long-distance hiking trail are of course the royal castles in Schwangau and Hohenschwangau near Füssen. Nature enthusiasts will fully enjoy the Ammerschlucht - the Grand Canyon of Upper Bavaria - between Peiting and Rottenbuch. Another highlight is the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wieskirche near Steingaden.

The boat between Herrsching and Dießen only runs in the summer months. In winter the lake must therefore be circled. A detailed description of the alternative route is available here.

Instead of stages 5 and 6, we can alternatively hike via Trauchgau. Here are the descriptions of Stage 5 and Stage 6.

Wegbeschreibung:

Stage 1: Berg – Dießen, 8 hours, 32.6 km

The route starts in Berg on Lake Starnberg at the votive chapel and leads along the idyllic lakeshore past Schloss Berg to Starnberg. It continues through the romantic Maisinger Schlucht up to Andechs Monastery. After a refreshment break, the trail leads through the Kiental to Herrsching. By excursion steamer, one finally reaches Dießen.

Stage 2: Dießen – Paterzell, 4:45 hours, 17.2 km

Past the Dießen Marienmünster, the route leads through dreamy forests and meadows to Wessobrunn. Worth seeing here are the memorial stone to the "Wessobrunner Prayer," the monastery, and the Tassilo linden tree. Afterwards, the trail follows a romantic stream valley up to Schönwag and via a spring slope finally to Paterzell with Germany‘s largest yew forest.

Stage 3: Paterzell – Hohenpeißenberg, 3:45 hours, 13 km

This slightly longer stage begins immediately with an ascent through the hillside forest to St. Leonhard and continues up to the Hohen Peißenberg with a magnificent panoramic view of the Alpine chain.

Stage 4: Hohenpeißenberg – Rottenbuch, 4:00 hours, 13 km

The route continues down into the romantically wild Ammer valley. The hike through the Ammerschlucht is one of the scenic highlights of the entire route. After another ascent, the Ammerschlucht is left and the trail leads uphill to Rottenbuch.

Stage 5: Rottenbuch – Prem, 6:00 hours, 22.4 km

Through the southern gatehouse, the path leaves Rottenbuch and leads over gentle hills to Wildsteig. Alternating between forest and meadows, the route now reaches the UNESCO World Heritage Site Wieskirche. From here, you first cross the Wiesfilz along the "Brettleweg" and reach Steingaden through the dark Eulenwald, which offers many sights (Welfenmünster, cloister, monastery garden). Then it continues over a small hill with a magnificent view of the Alpine chain to Urspring and through a beautiful moor to Prem. Variant: From the Wieskirche, you can also continue directly southward towards the mountains. After the Birnbaumer Filz and smaller hamlets, this variant finally ends in Trauchgau.

Stage 6: Prem – Füssen, 6:45 hours, 24.6 km

Along the Lech and always with a view of the Alpine chain, the path winds further over lush green meadows and past smaller bathing lakes. At Kühmoossee, the trail meets again with the variant over Trauchgau. It then continues between Forggensee and Bannwaldsee to the Pöllatschlucht at the foot of Neuschwanstein Castle. Passing Hohenschwangau Castle, Schwansee Park, and Kalvarienberg, the route leads into the old town of Füssen to Kaiser-Maximilian Square, the end point of the König-Ludwig-Weg.
