Roman Round

4:05 h 418 hm 379 hm 55,8 km moderate

Where the Romans once built the Via Claudia Augusta from stone about 2000 years ago to transport precious goods, today the cycling path of the Roman Round runs along parts of the south of Schongau.

The route offers incredibly beautiful paths through magnificent Alpine foothill landscapes, for the most part absolutely remote from the noise of roads, far from any stress and hectic. A route that makes you forget the time and makes it very imaginable how the Romans must have once marched along here.

In Altenstadt, an important trading hub on the Roman road, you can discover a reproduction of a section of road. At the former Villa Rustica near Peiting – a grand Roman country estate – the bathhouse can be visited in a glazed protective house.

In between, nature, small villages, and magnificent views beckon.

Tipp des Autors:

The bathhouse of the Villa Rustica near Peiting can be visited anytime. A Roman educational garden offers insight into the eating habits of the Romans almost 2000 years ago.

Sicherheitshinweise:

Consideration makes paths wide

Please note that in our region you often cycle on agricultural paths. You are warmly welcome on these paths, but these paths are of course also used by farmers with their vehicles to manage the land. Due to the width of the vehicles, the paths can sometimes become narrow. The paths remain wide enough if all users show mutual consideration and, if necessary, give way and make room for other users. Please note that it is often not possible for the large machines to leave the paths and drive off them. Therefore, please as cyclists give way when it becomes tight!

Thank you for your understanding and consideration for the people who have to work here!

Use of paths along rivers

We are pleased that the Water Management Office Weilheim has created dike paths along the rivers which can also be used by cyclists.

Please note that these paths were created for water management purposes and do not always meet the quality requirements of cycle paths. Especially after construction measures, flooding events, and storms (fallen trees), the paths may have damage or impassable sections. Furthermore, construction traffic should occasionally be expected.

Please use the paths with appropriate caution and observe the traffic signs on site! Use of maintenance paths is at your own risk.

Wegbeschreibung:

From Schongau to Altenstadt

The 55.8 km long Roman Round starts at Schongau station and heads north. Right on the city outskirts, the first tough elevation meters await – a little endurance test. Once on the wide plain, the path leads directly onwards to Hohenfurch. Through the town, it follows the idyllic Schönach brook towards Schwabniederhofen. Shortly before the village, the path turns eastwards through a small ascent, so that the village is bypassed. Here, for the first time, a magnificent panorama of the Alpine chain opens up, which will characterize the route until Lechbruck. After a few kilometers, it goes into the village of Altenstadt. Altenstadt was already an important trading hub in Roman times. The route leads directly to Via Claudia Place. A good opportunity for a break. Here you can view a 1:1 scale reproduction of a section of the Via Claudia Augusta with accompanying information boards about its construction.

From Altenstadt to Burggen

The Roman Round continues along the former course of the Via Claudia Augusta past the western outskirts of Schongau and then straight into an idyllic forest. Gentle hills increasingly sneak into the route. After the forest, there is a view over wide meadows and the Auerberg, on which the Romans settled over 2000 years ago. On this plain, a short detour to the Litzauer Loop, a popular viewpoint on the edge of the unspoiled river loop of the Lech, is recommended. The ride continues on the former Via Claudia Augusta through the agriculturally influenced village of Burggen. Through the old town center, the winding little streets lead past old farmhouses, exuding a distinctive original charm.

From Burggen to Lechbruck

Past the church, the route continues out of town where a small piece of magnificent peatland adjoins before a slight ascent follows over a mighty hill. Here there are wide meadows and an equally broad view of the beautiful landscape extending to the Alps. After a few kilometers, it gently descends to a barrier on the forest edge. This is the private property of Gut Dessau. The barrier and also the road through the estate may be passed and ridden with a bicycle. From here, it goes quite steep downhill through a forest on a wide asphalt road and then on flat terrain through Gut Dessau. After passing the second barrier, the road leads along the Lech to the Lech dam Dessau. On a detour over the dam to the other side of the river, you can play a pebble sound lithophone – a kind of large xylophone made of stones. Back on the west side of the river, the road continues through very charming forest and meadow landscapes, always with the Alps straight ahead in view, far from stress and hectic – always gently accompanied by the Lech. Time and again, cows stand or lie comfortably on their meadows, which are partially very natural and originally vegetated on the Lech banks. Idyllic pure. After a few kilometers, the path reaches the majestic Lech reservoir, on the outskirts of Lechbruck. Tip: Take a short break at the dam and enjoy the magnificent panorama.

From Lechbruck to Steingaden

Next, it goes along the lakeshore through the town, which is shaped by the partly wildly rushing Lech. The Lech bridge at the end of the town offers another wonderful view of the river and the Alps. After the bridge, the route leaves Lechbruck and continues along the well-traveled road to Prem, where the route descends from the road at the entrance to the town, quickly leaves it, and now demands some effort with a long steady climb. The plain reached afterwards offers a short panoramic enjoyment of the wide landscape. Then it goes downhill over secluded paths, through a small forest and hamlets to the well-trafficked federal road, which is crossed (careful when crossing!), to continue cycling towards Steingaden. Before reaching the beautiful former monastery town, an idyllic viewpoint invites you to pause. Park benches, an information board explaining the magnificent Alpine chain that presents itself, and shade-giving tall trees make the pause a place of calm and happiness.

From Steingaden to Schongau

After the viewpoint, the path leads directly to Steingaden, whose townscape is characterized by the imposing twin towers of the Welfen Münster and the partly preserved facilities of the former Premonstratensian monastery. A small town tour is definitely recommended here. The town center of Steingaden is incredibly photogenic, the Welfen Münster a magnificence. The partly preserved cloister tells of times gone by, and the lovingly designed monastery garden of the former monastery pharmacy is a place for the senses and offers heavenly peace. From here, it goes back north. The broad asphalted path leads to Schongau, far from roads and noise, idyllically over gently rolling meadows, repeatedly through small forests and past small lakes. A few kilometers before Schongau, a special Roman highlight awaits a visit. The Villa Rustica near Peiting was a stately Roman country estate built in the 2nd century AD. It is one of the largest facilities of its kind outside Italy. The bathhouse with an ancient hot air heating system, remains of wall paintings, glass windows, and fine ceramics indicate the upscale equipment of the country house. The remains of the excavated bathhouse can be visited all year round in a glazed protective house. A Roman educational garden offers insight into the eating habits of the Romans almost 2000 years ago. Afterwards, the Roman Round leads through a tall forest to the Lech reservoir and crosses it via the Lech dam. From here, a detour to the Schongau Lido with the opportunity to dine in the boathouse and the Lech raft, which is launched in high summer waiting for its guests, is worthwhile. Then it continues along the Lech back to the starting point.

Those who still have some time should visit the historic old town with the medieval town wall and the partially accessible rampart walk. A beautiful town center that invites you to stroll and linger in cozy cafés. Those who want to know more about the history of the town can join a city tour or go on a trace search with the audio guide tour. Author Oliver Pötzsch leads a very entertaining and informative tour through the town based on his novel "The Hangman‘s Daughter."
