This unique long-distance cycle route through the picture-book scenery of the Bavarian Alpine foothills begins at the Ammer sources in the Graswang valley near Oberammergau, one of the most beautiful high valleys of the Bavarian Alps.
Passing the Passion Play location of Oberammergau, the route slowly leaves the Alps along the Ammer and crosses the picturesque rolling hills of the Pfaffenwinkel with its numerous cultural monuments.
North of Weilheim, past the Ammersee, the cycle path now winds along the Amper. Numerous sights and beautiful river landscapes await the cyclist on the last section past the towns of Fürstenfeldbruck, Dachau, and Freising, before the Amper flows into the Isar at Moosburg.
An advantage of this direction is that the route follows the flow direction of the two rivers, thus always offering a pleasant gradient that makes cycling easier. In the opposite direction, the route is also very worthwhile as you always have the destination, the mountains on the horizon, in view.
The route from Moosburg on the Isar via the Ammersee to the Ammer sources south of Oberammergau is about 200 km long and can be leisurely covered in 3-4 daily stages if you also want to visit the beautiful towns and sights along the way.
You can start by taking the train to Oberammergau. Other entry and exit points along the route can also be reached by train or other public transport.

Tipp des Autors: Near Raisting, at the southern end of the Ammersee, lies the German Telekom earth station with the unique radome. In the middle of the Upper Bavarian Alpine foothills, the age of satellite communication began here in the mid-twentieth century.
Tours of the earth station (radome) are offered by the Pfaffenwinkel cultural guides or staff from the Weilheim-Schongau district office.
