Whether seeking to experience nature, or Bavarian culture and lifestyle – the Pfaffenwinkel region delivers it all! No matter where you are in the Pfaffenwinkel, you are surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Especially from the top of the Hoher Peißenberg mountain (988 metres), Auerberg mountain (1055 m) and Schönberg near Rottenbuch, which all can be reached in a pleasant walk, you can enjoy the magnificent view over the Pfaffenwinkel area. Often, group travelers choose the long-distance walking paths “König-Ludwig-Weg”, “Lechhöhenweg” or “Prälatenweg”.
The Pfaffenwinkel region is an area of farmers and this tradition is held high. Annual horse parades in several villages but also a foal market in Rottenbuch is living proof of the tradition. Among other cultural events, the Pfaffenwinkel is known for the famous concert series that are performed mainly in the fascinating churches, including the outstanding Wies Church. Without a doubt, seeing the famous Wies Church is a must for every visitor. No less worth visiting are the ancient or still operating monasteries of Wessobrunn, Rottenbuch, Steingaden and Bernried. Discover arts and culture in the Pfaffenwinkel’s many museums, for example the Buchheim Museum that encompasses an unusually broad spectrum of Expressionist art of outstanding quality. The “Osterseen” situated at the south end of lake Starnberg are a group of beautiful little lakes and part of a national geotope. Weilheim is an enterprising town which offers several shopping opportunities. Schongau with its medieval town centre makes you step back in time. Penzberg is just a stone’s throw away from lake Starnberg. Peißenberg takes you on a time travel back to the mining history. Peiting awaits you with traditional Bavarian cuisine in a convivial atmosphere. The rural area “Auerbergland” captivates the guests with a spectacular view. The mud and moor health spa of Bad Bayersoien provides an extensive range of wellness and health offers that help to escape the everyday life and relax for awhile.
Because of its central location the Pfaffenwinkel is also an ideal starting-point for long or short excursions, such as Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen or the royal castles of Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau and Linderhof. The village of the famous passion play Oberammergau and the abbey of Ettal are immediately in the vicinity. The city of Munich can be reached within 30 minutes to one hour taking the motorways A 95 or A 96.
